This month we will be working on the letters Q, R, and S through language literacy activities and with the help of Zoophonics. We also will do more activities that focus on writing skills, as well as activities to enhance pincher muscles, the muscles used in handling scissors, tongs and tweezers. This month we also plan to learn about the continents; we will develop multicultural awareness of through the use of maps, visual aides, and literacy.
Since we do a lot of messy sensory activities, we will need extra weather-appropriate clothing. Please make sure your child always has a full change of clothes.
Valentine's Day Party
Special Person of the Week Project
For this project you and your child will create a poster of his/her timeline including important events such as birth, holidays with the family, and other special events and facts about your child.
SOME THOUGHTS ON HISTORICAL ACTIVITIES IN OUR AREA
In order to help you instill in your children a sense of historical awareness, I wanted to suggest some activities that will likely stimulate your child's interest as well as teaching him/her valuable lessons.
In our immediate area, you could perhaps visit the Van Hoosen farm, which, as per its mission statement, “interprets, preserves and collects the history of the greater Rochester area for present and future generations.” The museum also incorporates a 19th century schoolhouse, which can lead to many enriching conversations with your child about children's lives throughout history.
In the larger Detroit Metro area, the DIA in Detroit could prove to be a rewarding cultural experience for you and your child. Greenfield Village at the Henry Ford museum also provides an enlightening look into the past for adults and children alike. This museum in particular caters heavily to young visitors, with opportunities such as churning your own butter or taking a ride in a horse-drawn carriage specifically designed for children.
We hope these suggestions at least get you thinking about more ways to teach your child cultural and historical awareness. If you have other suggestions, post them in the comments! We'd love to gather more suggestions.
