Happy New Year! What a beautiful holiday!
This month we are working on the following phonics: P, Q, R, and S. Through zoophonics and short stories, we will be focusing on kindergarten needs from now until May for these children going to Kindergarten in the full and social skills through cooperation activities that involve cooperative play throughout the community of the classroom. Our focus for Mathematics and Science will be identifying position and direction through activities that use maps beginning, middle and ending activities.
Please remember that winter apparel is a must, as our schedule involves large motor outdoor recesses three times a week. Make sure your children have hats, gloves, snow pants, as well as extra clothing in case of spills and other accidents.
We'd also like to remind you that every Thursday is show-and-tell day, and we will also be cooking Fridays from 10:15 to 10:30.
Starting January 10, we will be making “All About Me” posters.
SOME EXTRA THOUGHTS
Phonological awareness is the ability to detect and manipulate the sounds in words, which is why the HighScope curriculum we implement at Babes in Toyland uses zoophonic letterlinks. Children who use letter links early on develop critical letter and sound recognition skills and are far better prepared for learning how to read.
Dialogical learning, when a teacher or parent discusses pictures in books with the child or asks the child open-ended questions instead of purely teaching, is another method we implement in our center. It builds a relationship through adult-child language interaction around storybook reading, and it helps keep the child engaged through the entirety of the story.
